Bombardier Transportation and leading European rolling stock leasing company, Railpool, signed a framework agreement in June 2014 for the delivery of 65 TRAXX locomotives, with a first call-off of 35 locomotives and an option for delivery of up to 30 additional locomotives. Railpool operates a fleet of locomotives and rolling stock across Europe and this contract enables the company to extend its services on a new East-West corridor linking Poland with the Netherlands. The locomotives will operate in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, as well as in Hungary and Romania and will be equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS) and last mile functionality. The 'last mile' feature incorporates a battery, in addition to the diesel-electric engine, which enables AC locomotives to operate on non-electrified sections of track, such as terminals, stations, or ports. The TRAXX Multi-System locomotives:
- Are designed for speeds of up to 160km/h.
- Can operate under all catenary systems, including direct current (DC) and AC (alternating current) systems;
- Are suitable for both heavy freight and passenger services, nationally and internationally.
The TRAXX F140 AC with last mile functionality is the latest addition to the TRAXX locomotive portfolio and provides flexibile operations on non-electrified track.
