In 2001, the consortium Regional- / S-Bahnen BR 425.2, comprising the companies Bombardier Transportation and Siemens, received a contract from DB Regio AG for the supply of 40 Model 425.2 four-part multiple-unit trains for use by the RheinNeckar transportation authority. The multiple-unit trains are a version of the proven Model 425 that had been adapted to the special needs of customers. The vehicles are authorised for speeds of up to 140 km/h and provide rapid and safe change-over of passengers thanks to the entrance height of 798 mm and the externally-mounted folding steps. In addition, the journey is made more pleasant for travellers by improved seat comfort, a larger multi-purpose compartment and a ticket machine.
