Since the 1980's, the Bombardier-built automated people mover (APM) systems at McCarran International Airport have been integral part of the Airport's long-range expansion plans. Located only 8 km (5 mi.) from downtown Las Vegas, McCarran ranks as one of the busiest airports in the world.
Bombardier has maintained the shuttle systems at the Airport since the first system, leg C, opened in 1985. The second system, leg D, opened in 1998 and introduced the INNOVIA APM 100 vehicles.
In 2006, Bombardier received two contracts. The first included six INNOVIA APM 100 vehicles that will operate in a new underground shuttle system between Terminal 3 (T3) and the existing D-gate concourse. The second contract called for the supply of a further ten new vehicles to replace some of the existing fleet, and upgrades to the electrical and mechanical equipment on shuttle legs C and D.
