FLEXITY Outlook Light Rail System – Porto, Portugal

Bombardier Transportation, as a consortium member, was responsible for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the Metro do Porto light rail system. The four-line system connects with nine municipalities in the metropolitan area and interconnects with the city’s existing bus and railway lines. Delivered in stages, Phase 1 opened in 2002 and the entire system was completed in 2006.

Project summary:

  • The four lines total 60 km and feature 60 stations aboveground and 12 stations underground
  • Seventy-two 100% low-floor, bi-directional FLEXITY Outlook vehicles are comprised of seven modules
  • The total system capacity during peak hours is 20,300 passengers per hour per direction
  • Bombardier scope included the vehicles, CITYFLO 250 signalling solution, depot/workshop equipment and radio
  • Financing for the project was raised through a number of sources including a European Investment Bank, the Portuguese Government, the European Union and private financial markets.
