Bombardier Transportation signed a framework agreement with German rail operator, Deutsche Bahn in 2011 for the supply of 200 multi-engine diesel locomotives. 20 locomotives were ordered in June 2013, for operation on the Südostbayernbahn, DB Regio Allgäu and Niddertalbahn routes. Seven more will commence operations between Niebüll and Westerland/Sylt, hauling passenger trains over the Hindenburgdamm and halving the number of locomotives required. The BOMBARDIER TRAXX P160 DE Multi-Engine locomotive, which can be used for both national and international cross-border services, is a new variant of the highly successful TRAXX platform and features:
- An innovative diesel propulsion system for use with either passenger or freight services across Europe;
- Four rugged, heavy-duty industrial diesel engines in place of a single large diesel motor thereby increasing access to spare parts and services support;
- the four engine configuration dramatically reduces fuel consumption and maintenance costs;
- the modular locomotive design is compatible with conventional country specific equipment, including automatic train protection systems.
