Working Hand-in-Hand With Developing Countries

Transferring Standards and Know-How in India

For over 30 years, Bombardier Transportation India has worked closely with Indian Railways, earning a solid reputation as a quality supplier of propulsion and signalling equipment.

Our activities have contributed to all three pillars of sustainability: environmental protection, economic benefits and social development. Our achievements include:

  • Achieving ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification at the factory at Maneja, Vadodara, one of the first of our facilities to achieve certification. The site has been accident-free for five years, and has won several awards for outstanding HSE performance.
  • Introducing modern semiconductor technology to replace electro-mechanical devices previously used for varying the voltage on the primary side of the transformer to control the speed of a conventional locomotive.
  • Introducing a refurbishment process for tap changers that produces near-new equipment at about 60 per cent of the cost of new ones. About 80 per cent of the parts and components can be reused. The process also has social benefits: cleaning and reworking of the parts is carried out by small suppliers, helping their businesses grow while having a positive effect on those working at transport companies.
  • Purchasing and refurbishing the facility that had previously been rented out. The facility now serves as a role model for companies in the neighbourhood.
