In August 2000, Guangzhou Metro Corporation (GMC) placed an order for 156 MOVIA metros (26 six-car units), spares and consumables, special equipment and services with Changchun Bombardier Railway Vehicles Co. Ltd (CBRC), a joint venture between Bombardier Transportation and the then Changchun Car Company (CCC).
In October 2004, GMC placed a follow-up order for an additional 48 MOVIA metros (8 six-car units), spares and consumables, special equipment and services with CBRC. This brings the total number of MOVIA metro cars delivered by Bombardier to GMC to 330.
Engineering of the cars, propulsion system, bogies and project management for both projects were undertaken by Bombardier Transportation in Hennigsdorf, Germany.
