94 BOMBARDIER FLEXITY Swift light rail vehicles have been ordered for the Transport for Greater Manchester's (TfGM's) Metrolink system. Bombardier received its first order from TfGM in April 2007 for eight LRVs increased by four in October 2007. The original contract included an option for TfGM to order up to 97 vehicles. The first option order for a further 28 light rail vehicles followed in June 2008, with a second option for eight vehicles announced in March 2010, and a third option for 14 vehicles in August 2010. 12 more vehicles have been ordered in October 2011 and the following option announced in July 2012 consisted of 20 light rail vehicles.
The 28.4 m long light rail vehicles with a width of 2.65 m offer a capacity for 200 passengers. Wide double-door entrances ensure a rapid passenger flow and multi-purpose areas provide space for pushchairs and wheelchair users. To date 48 vehicles have been delivered to help relieve congestion in the Greater Manchester area.
