Following an order for 18 BOMBARDIER FLEXITY trams in 2002 and five additional vehicles in 2006, the City of Eskisehir ordered ten 100% low-floor trams from Bombardier Transportation in June 2012. The new trams will be identical to the ones already in successful revenue service, but equipped with a brand new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system as well as LED displays. Deliveries are scheduled for 2013.
In June 2002 a consortium consisting of Bombardier Transportation and the Turkish engineering group Yapi Merkezi was awarded a contract for the development, construction and initial operation of a 14.2 km light rail transit system. The ESTRAM project received the 2004 Rail System Award from the International Association of Public Transportation. This new order marks the continuation of a long-standing partnership.
The trams for Eskisehir will be 29.5 m long and 2.3 m wide, with five modules and three bogies. The vehicle will be capable of carrying 58 seated passengers, and a total of approximately 159 passengers. Wide double-door entrances ensure rapid passenger flow and multi-purpose areas provide space for pushchairs and wheelchair users.
