Double-Deck EMU VIRM - Netherlands

Bombardier Transportation has received an order from Netherlands Railways (NS Reizigers) for the delivery of 127 double-deck EMUs. The contract specifies 13 four-car and 33 six-car trainsets, plus 128 VIRM double-deck intermediate coaches (Verlengd InterRegio Materieel), which will be used to expand the current fleet of 81 IRM vehicles (InterRegio Materieel).

The IRM concept was jointly developed in the 90s by Bombardier Transportation and the operator specifically for Intercity services in the Netherlands. The IRM is a double-deck EMU incorporating energy-saving three-phase propulsion technology. The double-deck principle increases the seating capacity by up to 80%, thus making the vehicles extremely economical. With greater carrying capacity and reduced energy consumption, the VIRM is the ideal transport solution in metropolitan areas.

The VIRM offers travellers an exceptional level of comfort throughout. This notably includes the low noise level, fully air-conditioned vehicles, comfortable seats with both regular and face-to-face seating arrangements, transparent partitions and lots of stowage space for baggage and bicycles. Wide doors offer passengers fast and safe boarding and alighting. The modern interior and exterior design has a high level of acceptance among passengers. The vehicles are also equipped with toilets for physically handicapped persons.
