Bombardier Transportation is the first supplier in the industry to have successfully proven, in full commercial operation, its INTERFLO 450 ERTMS Level 2 technology on its pilot line in Switzerland. Swiss Federal Railways, SBB, accepted the world's first commercial ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 system in November 2003, a year and a half after the line was commissioned into commercial operation in April 2002.
Bombardier Transportation developed the trackside equipment and the train-borne equipment used on the line. The equipment consists of an EBI Com radio block centre, over 220 EBI Link 2000 Eurobalises as well as the installation of EBI Cab ATC onboard equipment including GSM-R onboard radio equipment.
63 vehicles of 5 different types were equipped to run on the Olten - Lucerne line, a 35 km double track with 9 stations and a line speed of 140 km/h, capable of running up to 57,000 trains per year and transporting more than 3,000,000 passengers and 240,000 tonnes of goods.
The INTERFLO 450 solution is proven to be reliable and safe, meeting the very high standards set by SBB. The test results show outstanding performance levels of 99.8% availability, with only 15 minutes reported delays in one week - equal to a delay of just one second per train, reaching standards above conventional signalling systems.
