As part of their commitment to further improve railway services across the country, Botniabanan AB awarded Bombardier a contract in 1997 to provide its INTERFLO 450 ERTMS Level 2 solution for the newly-built high speed railway line. The new line, which runs along the north-east coast of Sweden from Nyland to Gimonäs, is the first line in the Nordic region to be operating with ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 functionality.
The region, which includes a series of significant industrial locations now benefit from efficient freight transport and significant reduction in passenger travel times.
Passengers in the region were accustomed to travelling by bus or private car as rail was simply not an option. The journey between Örnsköldsvik and Umeå (at the Northern end) which could take up to two hours is now possible in just 55 minutes.
