ERTMS/ETCS level 2 solution for main lines (SIL4)

INTERFLO 450 is an ERTMS Level 2 signalling solution for main lines (SIL4). This solution comprises all the trackside products required for such a line, and also includes the automatic train protection (ATP) system, as well as the ATP system onboard the train.

The system has the following main characteristics:

  • An ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 ATP system displaying permitted, actual and target speeds and movement authority. Presented to the driver through a graphical alphanumeric and analogue display, with both audible and visual alarms.
  • Automatic train protection (ATP) information through EBI Com radio block centre
  • EBI Com radio block centre
  • EBI Lock computer-based interlocking
  • EBI Track train detection by track circuits or axle counters
  • EBI Switch point machines controlled by interlockings
  • EBI Screen control room handles train supervision

The INTERFLO 450 will be applied to new, dedicated high speed lines offering high levels of safety and speeds up to and beyond 250 km/h, or may be mixed with networks with existing ATP systems, thereby requiring STM functionality. The operation of ERTMS requires GSM-R radio system fitted in the network. The INTERFLO 450 system fitted presents opportunities for reduced trackside equipment e.g. light signals, cabling etc, representing significant capital and operational cost savings.

EBI Screen control room

The traffic is supervised by the EBI Screen control room system. This is a modern state of the art computer-based control and supervision system allowing the operator to give commands through a mouse or keyboard with the facility to have the position of the vehicles and optional wayside objects shown on both normal display screens and large rear projection screens.

The functionality includes:

  • Advanced CTC with flexible automatic route setting
  • Management of trains under ERTMS Level 2 supervision
  • Supervision and data acquisition (SCADA)
  • Passenger information displays (PIDs)
  • Closed Circuit TV (CCTV)
  • Public announcement (PA)
  • Radio communication

EBI Lock computer-based interlocking

The INTERFLO 450 solution uses EBI Lock computer-based interlocking. These interlockings can be either centralised or distributed, in which case the central unit is located in one place and the object controller units that drive the wayside objects can be located at some distance from the central unit. Dual and redundant architecture with hot standby provides high availability.

EBI Com radio block centre

The main function of the EBI Com is to control and supervise the ETCS Level 2 operating trains, e.g. to send movement authorities (MAs) to the relevant trains according to the ERTMS/ETCS class 1 specification. The EBI Com supports the Euroradio protocol, which provides safety for transmission via an open GSM-R network.

EBI Link ATP wayside equipment

Fixed telegram Eurobalises are used as reference points for the trains to calibrate and determine their position along the track in a safe way. The train position is reported to the EBICom radio block centre based on the Eurobalise information. These balises give an exact position to the train as it passes and allows the train to normalise its position, reducing the position error.

EBI Track train detection

The detection of vehicles in the INTERFLO 450 solution usually occurs through axle counters, or normal track circuits, which provide continuous detection on the position of the vehicle.

EBI Switch point machines

Point machines from the EBI Switch point machine range can be used, depending on what is suitable for the particular market. Conventional or sleeper integrated point machines are used in an INTERFLO 450 solution. The point machines are operated by the EBI Lock computer- based interlocking.

EBI Light signals

The INTERFLO 450 solution does not usually require the use of any signals, but if requested by the customer conventional, fibre optic or LED signals can be used.

EBI Gate level crossing

Complete level crossing systems are used in the INTERFLO 450 solution.

EBI Cab ATP onboard equipment

The onboard equipment consists of EBI Cab, which is a distributed onboard system. The ATP system onboard controls the train according to the information sent by the Eurobalises in ERTMS Level 1 and by EBI Com in ERTMS Level 2. The ATP onboard equipment ensures that the driver doesn't override the speed regulations.

EBI Tool processes & tools

The EBI Tool toolbox provides an integrated environment for adaptation, engineering, installation, test, commissioning and maintenance of an INTERFLO 450 solution.

EBI Drive train management system

EBI Drive 50 is a train management system to assist to the driver to achieve energy savings whilst retaining punctuality, promoting sustainability and appealing to the travelling public expectations. Potential energy savings of up to 15% are achievable. EBI Drive 50 is applicable to primary power sources including electric, diesel or hybrid locomotives.
