INNOVIA APM 200 – London Heathrow Airport, UK

Bombardier Transportation was the supplier of the INNOVIA APM 200 automated people mover system that formed part of original Terminal 5 (T5) construction project. The first phase of the system opened along with the T5 complex in 2008 and included two stations and two 3-car trains. The second phase opened in 2011 and included an extension to a third station and three additional vehicles. In 2012, Bombardier was awarded a contract for the final stage of phase 2, which included one additional vehicle. The APM system was incorporated in the design of the T5 complex to ensure the convenient and efficient mobility of passengers.

Project summary:

  • Ten driverless INNOVIA APM vehicles operating as 3- and 4-car trains
  • During peak hours, the modern vehicle fleet can carry 6,000 passengers per hour per direction
  • The shuttle service uses an underground dual-lane tunnel and features Bombardier’s CITYFLO 650 communications-based train control technology
