In 1999 a consortium of Bombardier Transportation and Siemens supplied the first generation of ICE 3 trains to German Rail (DB AG). At a later date further trains in various designs were added and, in addition, four trains were supplied to Dutch Railways (NS). German Railways operates a total of 50 one-system (403 range) and 13 multi-system variants (406 range) of ICE 3. Six of the 13 trains of the so-called ICE 3M were later equipped for use on the high speed route to Paris from 2007. The majority of the eight-section electric drive trains are, however, used on German Rail's high speed lines, e.g. Frankfurt-Cologne, and run at speeds up to 330 km/h. The four-system units are intended for operation on the DB AG railway network and for cross-border service with the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Switzerland as well as for operation on the European High Speed Network. The ICE 3 is a multiple unit train where 50% of the axles are driven and the associated traction equipment is distributed under the floor over the full length of the train. This arrangement of the electrical equipment makes it is possible to obtain a high acceleration as well as low adhesion coefficient and thus allows for more efficient space utilization for passengers and a maximum capacity of 458 seats. The clear external design is continued in the open and clear stylistic arrangement of the internal equipment and not least the clear view of track ahead over the shoulder of the driver in the end cars and reinforces the particular design of the ICE 3.
