FLEXITY – Berlin, Germany

Following successful passenger testing of four pre-series vehicles of a new tram type for the German capital, the Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) ordered 99 FLEXITY Berlin trams in September 2009. Serial vehicles were modified to reflect passenger recommendations and observations. In July 2012, BVG called off another 39 low-floor trams, bringing the total number of trams ordered to 142, made up of 38 long uni-directional vehicles, 53 short and 47 long bi-directional vehicles.

The FLEXITY Berlin tram was developed together by BVG and Bombardier Transportation and customized in line with the Bauhaus style reflected across the city. This tram’s design is not only characterized by a clear line structure, but also adopts the BVG corporate design. The FLEXITY Berlin tram design has been internationally recognized by the international IF Product Design Award 2010 and the Universal Design and Consumer Favorite Award 2012.

The 100% low-floor trams provide barrier-free entrance and easy access for passengers with limited mobility. The interior features wide passageways and spacious multi-purpose areas, which offer ample room for prams, wheelchairs and bicycles.

In 2015, Berlin celebrated the 150th anniversary of tram operation and Bombardier is proud of its long-standing partnership with BVG.
