FLEXITY - Berlin, Germany

The testing stage of the four pre-series vehicles generated a highly positive echo in the passenger surveys conducted on the new vehicle type of the Berlin tram. The Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) ordered an additional 99 BOMBARDIER FLEXITY  Berlin type trams including 40 long and 24 short one-way vehicles as well as 35 short bi-directional vehicles in September 2009. In July 2012 the BVG ordered another 39 trams. The total number of FLEXITY Berlin low-floor trams ordered now stands at 142.

The concept of the FLEXITY Berlin tram was developed together by BVG and Bombardier Transportation especially for the German capital. The result is a means of public transport in cities that are geared to the future, with step-less entrances and easy access for passengers with limited mobility. The interior is characterized by its generous passenger space, as well as multifunction compartments and air-conditioned passenger areas. The noise levels are lower than that of the trams used up until now. The vehicles have low electricity consumption and feed back electricity into the braking system.

The 2.4 metre wide trams offer an ideal utilization of space in the passenger compartment. Spacious multi-purpose areas provide ample room for prams, wheel-chairs or bicycles.

The cityscape of Berlin is characterized by the Bauhaus style, and so is this tram design which is not only marked by a clear line structure, but also reflects the corporate design of BVG and received the international IF Product Design Award 2010 and the Universal Design and Consumer Favorite award.
