ELECTROSTAR & Intercity Systems – Gauteng Province, South Africa

As a member of the Bombela Consortium, Bombardier Transportation was the turnkey supplier of the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link system in South Africa. Opening in phases, the first stage of the 54-month project opened in time for the 2010 Football World Cup. The final leg of the Gautrain system opened in 2012. Implemented as a Public Private Partnership, the project consisted of financing, design-build, operations and maintenance.

Project summary:

  • A fleet of 96 ELECTROSTAR electrical multiple units (EMUs) operate as four-car trains
  • The 80 km (50 mi.) rail system serves 10 stations and connects Johannesburg, Tshwane (Pretoria) and the OR Tampo International Airport
  • The ELECTROSTAR vehicles underwent final assembly in South Africa, were designed for commuter rail service and are capable of speeds up to 160 km/h
  • In conjunction with its Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment partners, Bombardier provided the electrical and mechanical equipment, vehicles and services related to the implementation of the system, as well as its CITYFLO 250 automatic train control technology
  • Bombardier is providing 15 years of maintenance services
