As a member of the Bombela Consortium, Bombardier Transportation was awarded a contract by the Gauteng Provincial Government of South Africa to provide an 80-kilometre (50-mile) rapid rail transit system to connect Johannesburg, Tshwane (Pretoria) and the OR Tambo International Airport.

The 54-month project was implemented under a Public Private Partnership scheme, which consists of financing, design-build, and operations and maintenance of the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link. The system opened in three stages:

Stage 1 which included the Sandton, Marlboro, Midrand, Rhodesfield, and OR Tambo International Airport stations opened in time for the 2010 Soccer world cup in June.

Stage 2, operations extending the system to the south to Rosebank station and to the north to Centurion, Tshwane (Pretoria) and Hatfield stations began on 2 August 2011.

Stage 3, the final leg of the Gautrain system (between Rosebank and Park station in the Johannesburg CBD) commenced operations on 7 June 2012.
