ALP-46 Electric Locomotive - USA

NJ TRANSIT, a large provider of public transportation in the USA, ordered in 1999 and 2001 29 BOMBARDIER ALP-46 multipurpose electric locomotives that are cruising the NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak's electrified network. The locomotives are part of a rail expansion programme that addresses current and future ridership growth.

Based on the Class 101 locomotives that German Railways have been operating successfully since 1996, the powerfulALP-46 can reach a maximum speed of 100 mph (161 km/h) and runs on two-axle Flexifloat bogies.

The drive system comprises a transformer, two traction converters type GTO, ester cooled, and air-cooled squirrel-cage induction motors with VERIDUR insulation on each axle. The design of the converters permits continuous dynamic regenerative braking. The converters operate completely independently of each other. Each has its own control system. The converters consist of interchangeable modules. This uniformity achieves high availability while keeping costs for maintenance and spare parts to a minimum.

The traction converters integrate a separate GTO inverter to supply auxiliary power at 480 Vac, 3 phase, 60 Hz. The frequency is controlled for optimization of energy consumption and noise. Another auxiliary converter feeds the train with three-phase 480 Vac, 60 Hz. The control system has a voltage of 74 Vdc.

The MITRAC electronic control system performs all control and communication functions. It is in every respect an "open" system, that can be subsequently adapted and expanded to meet new requirements, including the integration of third party systems, for example for radio control and traffic management. All diagnostic information is displayed on the screen in the driver's cab.

The ALP-46A is an innovative advanced development of the ALP-46. And in just the same way as the first generation, this development is truly impressive with both robust and innovative technology, as a three-system AC locomotive.

Many of the technical systems have been developed further in the ALP-46A – with an increased speed of 40 km/h, it can now travel at 201 km/h. A total of 36 new locomotives ordered in 2008 already made their way from Kassel across the Atlantic.
