Bombardier Transportation won a contract with Swiss operator, SBB Cargo in May 2003 for the supply of 18 TRAXX F140 multi-system (MS) locomotives, predominantly for use in freight services from Switzerland to Milan, Italy. Following delivery of the first locomotive in December 2004, a further three locomotives were ordered with some also being used on passenger services. This revolutionary locomotive, designated Re484 by the customer, has the following features:
- New carbody with increased crash-energy absorption for enhanced safety;
- Capability to operate under 15kV and 3kVdc overhead lines;
- In addition to pre-existing Swiss and Italian train protection systems, a European Train Control System (ETCS) has been added for use in the new Gotthard base tunnel;
- Commonality with existing Re482 locomotives owned by SBB Cargo.
