INNOVIA Monorail – Newark, USA

Bombardier Transportation delivered the world’s first fully automated monorail system at an international airport in 1996 to Newark Liberty International Airport. Known as AirTrain Newark, the INNOVIA Monorail 100 system provides passengers with a critical link between regional public transit systems, three terminals, remote parking facilities and car rental facilities. In 2001, the system was expanded to meet growing demand.

Project summary

  • The 4.67 km (2.9-mi.) system connects eight stations
  • Eighteen 6-car driverless INNOVIA Monorail 100 trains (108 cars)
  • Over 30,000 passengers use AirTrain Newark to, from and around the airport each day.
  • Bombardier operates and maintains the system, which runs reliably 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
