FLEXITY Berlin, Germany
As part of the process of renewing their fleet of trams, the Berlin transport company BVG put in an order for Bombardier to manufacture 100 % low floor, FLEXITY Berlin-type vehicles.
In the first stage, four pre-series vehicles in different configurations are to be delivered - one one-way and one bi-directional 30.8 metre long vehicle, and one one-way and one bi-directional 40 metre long vehicle. 206 further trams may be supplied after a test and trial phase.
In collaboration with the BVG an innovative vehicle design was produced that would meet the demands of modern public transport. Broad double-doors and flat entrances make Berlin's new trams exceptionally accessible and will meet the needs of passengers with limited mobility. The vehicles' 2.4 metre width provides a roomy passenger compartment with optimal use of space. Generous multi-functional areas provide plenty of room for prams, wheelchairs and bicycles. An air-conditioning system in the driver's and passengers' areas will ensure pleasant temperatures. The trams' design is influenced by the Bauhaus style which is characteristic of Berlin, and reflects both clean contours and forms and BVG's own corporate design.
