Crossing borders using innovative technology

Allowing trains to cross borders without the need to change locomotive or driver, the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS/ETCS) is now being introduced across Europe.

Responding to an EU initiative to introduce signalling systems for cross-border traffic, the system was developed by Europe’s rail and signalling industries (UNISIG). As an active member of UNISIG, Bombardier is at the forefront in producing the system specifications, for example, with the Bombardier-developed balise transmission technology.

Already supplying ERTMS Level 1 solutions in Europe and Asia, we were the first supplier to commission an ERTMS Level 2 system for commercial operation.

  • Bombardier pioneered the world’s first commercial ERTMS in Switzerland, 2002.
  • Bombardier developed Eurobalise technology, which is at the heart of ERTMS, and is currently the market leader in supplying ERTMS technology by kilometres of track installed.
  • Bombardier is in number one position in the ERTMS market with more onboard fitted vehicles than all competitors combined and also with more route kilometres equipped with ERTMS.
  • Currently, 2000 vehicles are equipped with ERTMS onboard systems, over 60,000 Eurobalises have been installed and over 8000 km of track have been equipped with ERTMS technology.
  • Bombardier pioneered the world’s first computer-based interlocking system.
