The Heart of the Train

Based on Bombardier’s field proven modular concept, MITRAC (Modular Integrated TRACtion system) converters can be configured to fit any customer need perfectly and enable operators to run passenger and freight services efficiently and economically using any conventional power source.

The converter is the direct link between the energy source and a train’s drive and control system. It converts energy into a form the train can use. And it does it on rail networks as diverse as France, Brazil, China, India, Germany, North America and the United Kingdom. In Europe for instance, trains fitted with MITRAC propulsion and control equipment can fulfill multiple functions such as power conversion on AC as well as DC supplies with full recuperation during braking, providing efficient, uninterrupted transportation performance in regions with different power systems as well as across national borders. In North America, the majority of metropolitan regions currently have networks with electrification limited to downtown and central areas, but most rural and transcontinental services still rely on diesel.  Dual power systems withMITRAC traction converters are able to provide traction power from both catenary and diesel engines, and are thus the ideal solution for seamless commuter services providing convenient one-seat rides.  For diesel locomotives, traction converters process the power coming from up to four individually controlled fuel-efficient diesel engines in order to fulfill the latest emission standards.

The MITRAC converter modules, the core elements of the converters are optimally designed to meet precise customer requirements, whether it is to supply power to drive the train forward or to power the on board auxiliary systems. The inherently modular design permits straightforward adaptation to different power sources but also to the complete range of vehicle applications.

Based on mounting principles, the following three types of converters can be defined:

Modular for underframe mounting

Used for metros, commuter, regional and intercity trains but also for high floor trams and people movers.

Modular for roof mounting

Used where low-floor entry is a customer requirement: trams, metros, commuter and regional trains.

Modular for machine room mounting

This principle is applied when the vehicle design facilitates for the converters to be incorporated in the carbody, especially for double-deck trains, locomotives and high speed powerheads.

MITRAC Hybrid

The Bombardier MITRAC Hybrid enables vehicles to operate efficiently on electrified tracks as well as on non-electrified tracks. This is made possible with a common propulsion chain that is capable of utilizing both electric and diesel power sources. Customer benefits include minimal use of fossil fuels, low emissions and economically optimal and flexible allocation of the fleet.

Today, Bombardier Transportation offers in the low power segment the world’s most innovative, efficient and reliable solution based on industry standard IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) modules, combining the best power-to-weight-ratio with an environment friendly cooling system. It’s one of the reasons why more than 4,200 MITRAC IGBT converters for low-power applications have been sold to date.

Solutions for every Low Power Propulsion Application

The MITRAC 500 traction converter product family can be applied to any power system in any country and for different vehicle applications from trams to people movers. Bombardier also offers converters for dual system LRVs called tram-trains, running in cities under 750 V DC and mainline tracks with 15 kV 16.7 Hz supply. This allows flexible use, in inner cities, in the suburban and regional conurbation areas.

Higher Reliability through Modularity

MITRAC 500 traction converters are based on a unique concept that enables extensive standardization. It consists of one modular and scalable core design that can be adapted to a wide variety of applications and power ranges.

The converters are based on the MITRAC CM-S converter module. The forced air-cooled CM-S contains up to 12 IGBTs and provides outputs for two to four AC motors, two brake resistors and the energy storage system. The modular compartments allow a customer specific arrangement of the converter system and its functionality.

One of the features of the CM-S is its easy maintainability combined with the possibility of rapid removal and replacement. The water / air heat exchanger for the traction motor and the brake resistor unit is very easy to maintain as well. The applied water valves in the cooling circuit close automatically when the water tubes are removed. The converter configurations for vehicles with 10 tons or 12 tons axle load are shown in the table below and illustrate the flexibility of theMITRAC 500 modular converter system.

2 x 360 kW for one motor each or 720 kW for two motors in parallel, in combination with the basic rheostatic brake and the MITRAC Energy Saver system are possible. The basic line voltage system of 750 V DC is also available with a second system for vehicles that run under mainline systems (15 kV AC 16.7 Hz).

Bombardier’s stand-alone auxiliary converters (MITRAC AU 500 family) are available with output power of up to 75 kVA and up to 12 kW DC output for the vehicle control system as well as for the vehicle battery charging. Different power ratings allow the vehicle builder to optimize the auxiliary supply to the customers’ needs.

Solutions for every Medium Power Propulsion Application

The world has many different systems for public transport. The MITRAC 1000 traction converter product family can be applied to any power system in any country. This allows flexible use not only within cities, but also in the suburban and regional areas.

Higher Reliability through Modularity

MITRAC 1000 traction converters are based on a unique concept that enables extensive standardization. It consists of modular and scalable designs that can be adapted to a wide variety of applications and power ranges. The converters are based on stand-alone units or modules that can be used for a range of applications including line converters, motor converters for asynchronous and permanent magnet motors, choppers and auxiliary converters.

The stand-alone units (MITRAC TC1410 / TC1420 family) are forced air cooled or natural convection cooled. They can provide outputs for up to four motors, two brake resistors or alternatively two energy storage systems.

The module (CM–C family) is forced air or water cooled, contains up to eight IGBTs, and is able to provide outputs for up to four AC motors and two brake resistors. The modular compartments allow a customer specific arrangement of the converter system and its functionality.

One of the features of TC1410 / TC1420 converters and CM-C modules is a high degree of maintainability combined with easy and rapid parts removal and replacement.

Auxiliary Converters

Bombardier Transportation provides stand alone auxiliary converters (MITRAC TC1410 AU family) as well as integrated auxiliary converters using CM-C modules, with output power of up to 300 kVA AC output and up to 25 kW DC output for the 24 - 110 V DC vehicle supply system as well as for the vehicle battery charging.

Different power ratings allow the vehicle manufacturer to optimize the auxiliary supply to the needs of the vehicle and its application. In regions with high ambient temperature and the need for air conditioning, an advanced solution is possible.

Solutions for every Power System

Europe has four major line voltage systems. Asia and North America have additional ones. TheMITRAC traction converter product family can be adapted to any power system in any country, and therefore enable seamless border-crossing operations. Bombardier also offers converters for diesel-electric and dual power (combination of diesel-electric and electric) locomotives to cover non-electrified routes.

Higher Reliability through Modularity

MITRAC 3300 traction converters are based on a unique concept that enables extensive standardization. It consists of one basic modular and scalable design that can be adapted to a wide variety of applications and power ranges.

The converters are based on the MITRAC CM-M (Converter Module - Modular). Each water cooled CM-M contains up to twelve IGBTs, and is able to provide up to six AC input and output phases. The building block structure allows for a wide range of different CM-M arrangements to meet customer requirements.

One of the features of the CM-Ms is a high degree of maintainability combined with easy and rapid removal and replacement. The water valves in the cooling circuit close automatically when the CM-Ms are removed.

The converter configurations shown below illustrate the wide power and feature ranges that are possible: From 2 to 6.4 MW power at the wheel, all combinations of line voltage systems, providing redundancy configurations with up to 75% of remaining power available in case of failures and providing auxiliary power and / or head end power for the passenger cars.

Auxiliary Converters

Bombardier provides both stand-alone auxiliary converters (MITRAC AU 3000 family) with output power of up to 200 kW as well as auxiliary and train supply converters integrated in traction converters which provide up to 1 MW or even more power to supply auxiliary devices as well as passenger rail cars.

The MITRAC AU 3320 for instance is a stand-alone auxiliary converter with two auxiliary units integrated in a multi-purpose electric cabinet. One key advantage of this air cooled auxiliary converter is its compatibility with the traction converter in areas such as control, modular concept and mechanical design.
