We seek to support and champion the local communities where we live and operate around the world.
Each year, we contribute resources, including the time and talents of our people, to meet a range of local needs, focusing primarily on furthering innovation, environmental sustainability and education. In 2016, we contributed close to $ 3 million to our communities worldwide. In addition, the J. Armand Bombardier Foundation donated more than $3 million to honour our founder's vision and to support the needs of our home community in Canada.
Community Programs and Partnerships
Young Leaders Program: A year-long mentoring program providing a comprehensive training to graduate students from engineering universities in India. The program is aimed at creating an effective integration with the premier campuses in India and develop a pool of young talent to drive innovation at Bombardier.
In 2016, we recruited 36 engineers in this program.
FIRST Robotics Québec: Increasing academic perseverance through a hands-on engineering experience for students to design, build and program an industrial-sized robot in only six weeks. We have been an active partner in the competition’s planning, execution and promotion since its creation in 2012. We continued our support in 2017 and almost 100 of our employees shared their time and passion as volunteers. This year, we also invited representatives from an additional 50 schools to receive a full day training on the FIRST Robotics program to encourage them to join in the years to come.
Sierra Gorda: A long-term partnership with a community organization working to protect the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in Mexico. In 2016, our support focused on reducing CO2 emissions through a voluntary carbon offset project.
Inspiring Future Aviators: An educational partnership with the New England Air Museum designed to encourage young people to pursue careers in aviation. During the 2015–2016 school year, the program served local students from technical and vocational high schools at no cost to them or their schools.
Employee volunteering is part of our commitment to be an active member in the communities where we operate. In 2017, our aerospace facility in Mexico celebrated the 10th anniversary of its volunteering program, Causa Querétaro. To mark the event, 130 Bombardier employees donated their time and energy to refurbish the Ruben Jaramillo Recreational Park in Queretaro, Mexico.
