Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation and the leading Russian rail manufacturer UVZ are demonstrating their joint capabilities for the Russian market at Germany’s largest public exhibition, the Hannover Messe, from today until April 12. Russia is the partner country for this year’s trade fair under the theme of Integrated Industry. Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, visited the opening ceremony of the exhibition.
The fair focuses on the growing integration of all areas of industry including cooperation across corporate and sector boundaries. The two partners, Bombardier Transportation and UVZ, are presenting their milestone programme for the joint development of metro trains specifically designed for the challenging requirements of the Moscow Metro and other cities in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), as well as their partnership in the tram sector. Russia is rapidly modernising its transportation infrastructure ahead of hosting a series of international sporting events leading up to 2018 (including Formula One, the Winter Olympics and the world football championship).
In the presence of Russia’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Denis Manturov, and Germany’s Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, Philipp Rösler, the two companies, represented by Oleg Sienko, General Director of UVZ, and Laurent Troger, President Rolling Stock Atlantic and Services, Bombardier Transportation, signed agreements that establish their long term partnership in the metro market in Russia and the Community of Independent States. Both companies are also considering a possible extension of their partnership through a further cooperation to ensure technical support throughout the lifecycle of the metro trains.
The jointly developed high capacity metro trains set new standards of passenger comfort and metro system throughput, while increasing substantially the passenger exchange at stations, an important asset for high volume metro lines such as in Moscow. The new design anticipates significantly reduced energy consumption and maintenance costs compared to current metro trains operating in the region.
Worldwide, Bombardier Transportation’s metro cars transport passengers on more than seven billion trips every year in over 40 cities, including New York, London, Berlin, Paris, Stockholm, Helsinki, Shanghai, Singapore and New Delhi. Bombardier Transportation has delivered over 12,000 metro cars in the past 20 years. More than 50 world leading operators in over 60 countries rely on Bombardier Transportation’s uninterruptable service support in providing efficient, competitive and sustainable rail operations, maintaining more than 8,000 rail cars for operators in Europe, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region.
“Our partnership with Bombardier Transportation, that started last year, has already brought first results – we won a tender for the supply of modern trams for Moscow. Today, we confirmed our serious intentions to work on an upcoming tender for the supply of modern metro trains for the Moscow Metro,” said Oleg Sienko, General Director of UVZ. This could result in the creation of 1,200 highly qualified jobs in Russia in the event of an order from the upcoming tender for Moscow Metro.
“To ensure the future success of global megacities like Moscow, there is a need to ease and enhance the way passengers travel and to reduce transit times,” said Laurent Troger, President Rolling Stock Atlantic and Services, Bombardier Transportation. “By joining forces with UVZ, we can offer the most advanced trams and metros for Russia that provide seamless mobility, set new standards in passenger comfort and reduce the constraints of existing networks. Our partnership with UVZ is making good progress and will provide us with many long-term growth opportunities in the region in the run-up to 2018 and beyond.”
Bombardier Transportation and UVZ are displaying models of the Moscow metro and the BOMBARDIER FLEXITY Russia tram at their joint stand in Hall 1. In December 2012, UVZ signed a contract with the Moscow City Transport Agency to deliver 120 low-floor trams of the FLEXITY type, manufactured by UVZ. The product is a variant of Bombardier’s FLEXITY family of vehicles operating worldwide.
At the Russian Federation stand, Bombardier and UVZ are exhibiting the tram driver’s cab for Linz, a city with which Bombardier has a long-standing partnership. Bombardier Transportation has won four tram orders in the city, most recently in 2009 for 23 FLEXITY 100% low-floor trams. These trams received the Red Dot Design Award Honourable Mention in 2010 and began their successful revenue service in 2011.
The metros and trams feature the world’s most advanced technologies in vehicle manufacturing, including the reliable BOMBARDIER FLEXX bogies and BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion and control system. The bogies ensure low noise and high comfort, reliability and high levels of safety. Thanks to their high technical reliability and significant life cycle cost reduction, they are the most environmentally friendly low-floor bogies available in the market. The reliable MITRAC 500 propulsion portfolio combines the best power-to-weight ratio and highly efficient intelligent control system with low energy consumption. In addition, its modular and compact converter product portfolio and modern drive solutions enable great reliability, flexibility and low life cycle costs.
Bombardier has sold more than 1,200 FLEXITY 100 per cent low-floor trams worldwide. About 3,500 Bombardier trams and light rail vehicles are in revenue service or on order in approximately 100 cities across Europe, Australia and North America. Trams and light rail vehicles are the most energy efficient mode of transportation, consuming up to five times less energy per passenger than cars travelling with an average of between one and two people.
The corporation“Uralvagonzavod” (UVZ) comprises about 30 industrial enterprises, research institutes and design offices in Russia and Europe, employing more than 100,000 people. For many years, UVZ has been the leading domestic designer and manufacturer of freight railway cars with powerful technological and intellectual potential. Today, UVZ is one of the leaders in the Russian transportation sector. The company is considered to be one of the largest Russian research and production complexes, combining metallurgical production, car building production, mechanical assembly production, tool production and other types of closed production cycles. A number of engineering centres, including a parent engineering centre for freight cars and two in-house research and development institutes, enable the corporation to master advanced technologies, successfully develop and introduce new models of transportation and special equipment production. The corporation has produced more than 100,000 freight rail cars in recent years, as well as over 100,000 defence product units. According to the American publication “Defence News”, UVZ is among the world’s 100 largest industry and defence corporations.
In 2012, UVZ’s turnover amounted to approximately $7 billion US, its EBITDA rate stood at $700 million US, its return on EBITDA was 16,2%, with a projected net profit of more than $ 400 million US. The corporation showed serious growth in 2012 compared to 2011: revenue from sales and services grew by 44%, profit on sales by 21% and net profit by 26%. In total, the three-year period 2010-2012 saw a doubling of the corporation’s basic indicators (revenues, EBITDA, net income).
