Urban expansion and a growing desire for unlimited mobility is increasing the importance of innovative transport solutions. Individual car traffic is increasingly grinding to a halt, while many drivers still hesitate to switch to public transport. The Bombardier FLEXITY Swift vehicles offer a practical alternative as they run mostly on tracks separated from individual car traffic which allows travelling at a higher average speed. The high level of comfort and spacious passenger compartments of the FLEXITY Swift cars impress passengers the moment they get on. Stepless entrances ensure easy access, especially for older or disabled passengers or those with prams. This means shorter stops in the stations, which in turn, means shorter headways and greater passenger satisfaction. The modular manufacturing concept permits an ideal combination of steel, aluminium and glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP).
Bombardier can rely in this context on its proven technological expertise in the design of aircraft as one of the world's main producers in this industry. The substructure is made of steel to absorb longitudinal forces and facilitate repairs whereas the roof is made of aluminium in order to reduce weight. The greatest advantage of the modular manufacturing concept, however, is its flexibility for the operator. For example, in case of need the front module can be replaced by a new one within a few hours. The FLEXITY Swift vehicle can be put back into service within a very short period of time. The Bombardier FLEXITY Swift family, first introduced in Cologne (Germany), became the trendsetter for solutions all over Europe in places such as London-Croydon (United Kingdom), Stockholm (Sweden), Istanbul (Turkey) as well as in the Netherlands.
Bombardier Transportation also offers vehicles designed for existing routes with elevated platforms. They allow, for instance, stepless boarding at platform heights of 900 mm. These products are based on the technology used in the low-floor FLEXITY Swift family. Therefore, standard elements that have been successfully integrated in the past can be used instead of tailor-made solutions. The proven modular vehicle concept used in producing the FLEXITY Swift vehicles is also reflected in significantly reduced investment and maintenance costs. At the same time this concept guarantees maximum flexibility in the choice of interior and exterior industrial design.
